Finding food isn’t always easy, and it often takes a lot of work to catch it. This is especially true for predators going after fast moving prey. So, what if you let someone else do the work, then steal it for yourself? This is a strategy that some animals use, called kleptoparasitisim. Klepto means ‘to steal’ and parasitism means that one animal benefits (the stealer) and the other animals is harmed (the one the prey is taken from). This strategy makes sense for the stealer as they can spend less energy capturing higher quality prey if they let another animal do all the chasing. Did you know that Birds, and in particular, bald Eagles are excellent food stealers?
